Lifeguard course
Here is some information about our lifeguard training for summer 2025.
1) The class will run May 28-June 30
2) I'll (Christian) be your instructor! I really enjoy teaching lifeguarding and am excited to be able to offer this training for our summer staff. The certification is through the American Red Cross.
3) There will be a $75 fee associated with the class to cover a registration fee and for some materials you will keep. The fee can either be paid up front or taken out of your paycheck.
4) We will be using a blended learning method (online and classroom) which helps us cut down on class time. Once we get the class registered, you'll receive a link from the Red Cross for the online material. It's not necessarily challenging but will be important information for the class. You complete the CPR/AED test at the end of the online section.
5) The first thing we will do in person is complete the swimming pre-requisites:
- Swim test. Starting from the pool edge, participants jump in and submerge in the pool then swim 150 meters, stop and tread water for 2 minutes with just their legs, then swim a final 50 meters. The swim itself is not timed but I need to see continuous, rhythmic swimming using freestyle or breast stroke with your face in the water. Goggles are allowed.
- Timed brick event. You'll have about 1.5 minutes to swim out, retrieve a 10 lb brick off the bottom of the pool, and swim with it back to the start. Goggles are not allowed for this one
I think that the prerequisites are the hardest part of the course. If you can get through this event then I can teach you everything else you need to know. Please use this information to decide if this class is a good fit for you and reach out if you have any questions! If it all sounds good for you, just confirm that for me in your reply.
